Santiago''S Awareness Of Surroundings

Santiagds Awareness of Surroundings Dreams are not only about whether they have been achieved or not, but also the process to achieve them. Have you ever wondered how important the process is? For example, a student never paid attention to the teacher and never studied before the test. He was cheating during the test. If he was lucky, he would get good mark but he did not learn anything. That boy would have lots of trouble to reach his dream in the future if he did not change the bad habit of his.

On the other hand, Santiago always earn something new from his surroundings and enjoy the process even if it was not as smooth as he thought it would be. In addition, he was not conscious of his circumstance at first. However, by analyzing Paulo Coelho''s The Alchemist it will became clear, that Santiago become more aware of his surroundings as the book progressed through his experiences in the first, middle, and last part of the book. At the beginning of the book, Santiago was unaware of his surroundings.

First, Santiago did not realize that actually the treasure that he was looking for was at the bandoned church, which is the first place that he has visited. He Just remembered that two years ago, he had a dream that he should travel to Spain and find a ruined church. There was an enormous sycamore tree, if he dug at the roots, he would find the treasure (Coelho, 163). Due to the fact, he had already found his treasure in the first place where he started his Journey. Secondly, Santiago thought that the old king was a gypsy too.

The old king wanted to help Santiago to accomplish his personal legend instead. Furthermore, the old woman had not charged Santiago anything, but he old king possibly was her husband. Probably the old man was a gypsy too (20). At first, Santiago thought that the old king was the gypsy woman''s husband. They were going to find a way to get more money in exchange for information that did not exist, but actually the old man was helping Santiago to achieve his personal legend. Thirdly, Santiago was being robbed at the bar.

All around him was the market, people coming and going, shouting and buying, but he could not find his new friend (38). It clearly explained that Santiago was unaware when he gave his money to his new friend. His new friend deliberately took him to the market so that he could disappear easily. At the starting point of the book, Santiago met many mistakes such as, the treasure that actually in the roots of the sycamore tree in the ruined church, he assumed that the old king was a gypsy too, and he was being robbed at the bar.

These examples conclude that he was not aware of his environment. Even though Santiago was not cognizant of his surroundings at the beginning, but he was starting to aware of the situation. Along the Journey, Santiago was starting to realize that the old king was helping im to get the treasure. Santiago saw candy merchant worked really hard so that he could travel and marry a shopkeeper''s daughter. Then, he realized that he could do the same thing the old man had done (43).

Melchizedek hoped desperately that the boy would be successful. By experiences he had, it reminded that Melchizedek was actually helping him. Moreover, Santiago was starting to know how to read omens for the first time. He took out one of the stones and it was "yes", and that meant he would keep pursuing his personal legend ) It was the very first time ne read omens and ould make his own decision. In addition, Santiago realized that port towns are full of thief, his friend had told him.

For instance, it stated in the book "There was a port town, and the only truthful thing his friend had told him was that port towns are full of thieves" (40). As Santiagds Journey keep continuing, he started to realize his surroundings through experiences that he had such as, saw the candy merchant worked very hard, remembered what the old king said when he took out one of the stones, and when he remembered that port towns were full of thieves. However, as Santiago gained experiences continuously, he began to be more attentive to his surroundings.

From all of Santiagds experiences that he had been through, he was aware of his surroundings. For example, he communicated with the nature and the soul of the world as mentioned in the book that the desert asked the boy what love is (144). Santiago was able to reach through to the soul of the world because he had used his heart and his heart taught him. Furthermore, when Santiago saw a scarab beetle, he must dug that spot. During his time in the desert, he had learned that in Egypt, the scarab beetles are a symbol of God.

That is why he dug the spot where there was a scarab beetle on it. As time goes by, Santiago finally aware of his surroundings through his experiences talking to the desert, the sun, and his knowledge about symbol of scarab beetles. By following these three arguments, they obviously showed that Santiago became more aware of his surroundings through his experiences in the first, middle, and the last part. At the beginning of the book, Santiago was unaware of his surroundings ecause he encountered problems in new places that he had never visited.

Once again, along his Journey, he began to aware since he gained more experiences and realized everything that have had happened to him. Finally, at the end of his Journey, he was aware of his surroundings. He could read omens and communicate with the soul of the world. Even though Santiago had a lot of trouble during his Journey, his unawareness taught him many things and led him to achieve his personal legend. Hence, awareness of the surroundings is essential to reach the desired dreams.
